Job Description:

Position Summary

The Produce Buyer / Manager of Produce Acquisition is responsible for the procurement and management of all produce items acquired by the Greater Boston Food Bank. This position oversees and manages all produce purchasing, donations, and inventory to ensure a consistent supply of produce is available for distribution to GBFB’s network of partners in Eastern Massachusetts. This person will maintain a consistent product mix while expanding variety to achieve GBFB targets and help achieve our mission to End Hunger Here.

Position Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the management of produce inventory acquired across all MCTs, including budget planning and budget management for all produce purchasing programs.
  • Tracks and measures purchases vs available funds to achieve monthly and annual goals.
  • Sets up contracted programs with suppliers on key produce commodity items; Establishes and processes annual contracts with MA Grown farmers to support the MEFAP program.
  • Purchases products at the most favorable price consistent with quality, quantity, specification requirements and other established factors.
  • Responsible for QA on all inbound product including daily quality checks on all items previously received to determine if potential action is needed.
  • Purchase Order and invoice management through NetSuite.
  • Maintains proper inventory levels to ensure high service levels and variety for the clients.
  • Coordinates and schedules delivery of product into the GBFB; Communicates effectively with the warehouse, transportation and distribution teams.
  • Establishes and builds effective relationships with suppliers.
  • Attends key trade shows to keep up with Produce trends, innovation and collaborate with suppliers and others in the Produce network.

  • Strong analytical and organizational skills
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office suite, particularly Microsoft Excel
  • Strong negotiation skills
  • Excellent written, oral and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent organizational and prioritization skills with strong attention to detail

Mandatory Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Minimum of 3 years of retail/wholesale food industry experience required. Produce preferred.
  • Demonstrates the required digital competencies that result in the effective usage of the full range of digital technologies at GBFB.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and work cross-functionally.

Physical Demands

  • Ability to work independently and adhere to strict guidelines
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Ability to work in an office environment
  • Ability to lift up to 30 lbs.

Work Environment

  • The job is performed indoors in an office environment but requires frequent visits to the warehouse (including warehouse coolers) to inspect inventory
